This super easy DIY natural baking soda free deodorant is toxin free and actually works!
If you’ve found this post here, chances are you know about the toxins present in traditional drugstore deodorant brands and are looking for a better, safer option. You’re in luck!
When I was pregnant with my first child I began to look into ways to reduce the chemicals and toxins in our home. I started small with switching to natural laundry detergent and reducing harmful chemicals in our cleaning products. Then I stopped using any scented air fresheners including the wall plug ins, wax melters, and my favorite Evergreen scented candles. I slowly worked up to items like makeup face creams, and body lotions.
Those items were easy to replace with natural alternatives. Deodorant, however, was another story.
In my search to rid my underarms of toxins, I tried so many different natural brands. They either felt sticky, simply didn’t work, or gave my skin a rash. I had heard that the detox period for switching to natural deodorant can sometimes cause a rash, as your skin was trying to purge itself of chemicals. I roughed it out for months before realizing it truly was a sensitivity to the baking soda ingredient. So I took to making my own.
Here's a breakdown of the ingredients:
Organic Raw Shea Butter: Full of fatty acids and vitamins, shea butter works wonders to soften and condition skin. It is super gentle and non-comedogenic, meaning it doesn’t clog pores.
Organic Raw Cocoa Butter: Super versatile, cocoa butter is high in antioxidants, meaning it’s great at protecting skin from environmental stressors. Like shea butter, it’s solid at room temp but melts at body temperature so it applies beautifully.
Arrowroot Powder: Arrowroot powder is our main absorbing agent in the recipe, to keep you dry!
Activated Charcoal: Activated charcoal is amazing at neutralizing odors. It is extremely porous, meaning it has a high binding surface area. It attracts and binds to odors and bacteria, neutralizing them.
Essential Oil: I love adding in my favorite lavender essential oil, purely for the scent. It’s such a light calming note!
This DIY Natural Baking Soda Free Deodorant will be your armpits' new best friend.
DIY Natural Baking Soda Free Deodorant
Here’s the scoop:
4 Tablespoons Organic Raw (Unrefined) Shea Butter
1 Tablespoon Organic Raw (Unrefined) Cocoa Butter
5 Tablespoons Arrowroot Powder
1/2 teaspoon Activated Charcoal Powder
20 drops of your favorite scent Essential Oil (I love soothing lavender for this application)
- Melt the shea and cocoa butters gently in a glass bowl set over a pot gently boiling water, stirring frequently.
- Carefully remove from heat. Gently stir in arrowroot powder, activated charcoal, and essential oil.
- Pour into a clean glass jar, and allow to cool at room temperature to solidify.
- Use a clean utensil to scoop from the jar. Don’t scoop with your finger as this could introduce bacteria to your deodorant jar! Use about a pea sized amount for each underarm.
- This will keep for about 6 months!
